A two-year development cycle

These durable and fatigue-free socks were developed to meet the needs of hardworking factory floor personnel at a set of factories in Higashiosaka, a town noted for its craftsmanship.

A two-year development cycle

The process began as an attempt to design comfortable socks for eighteen factories in Higashiosaka, an area noted for its congeries of small factories and Japanese-style craftsmanship. The factory workers wanted socks that would be durable enough to withstand hard use, but comfortable enough to reduce fatigue when worn with safety shoes and boots.
We focused on four key aspects:

  1. Tear resistant and durable
  2. Odorless
  3. Fatigue-reducing
  4. Energizing

We underwent several prototypes and launched a pilot trial with workers at factories, using their feedback to improve development. We soon learned that standard piled fabric weaves, while they reduce fatigue by cushioning from impact, are not very durable and tend to break down quickly.

ECONOLEG thus developed a patented cushioned weave (patent no. 6284256) which offers both resilience and excellent cushioning. Our cushioned weave incorporates a single cylinder, “cut boss” weave into the sole to enhance cushioning and durability. The result is a totally new level of cushioning and impact absorption beyond standard piled fabric that is like wearing an insole.

There are many other ingenious techniques at work to reduce fatigue.

Seeking to make our products suitable to a wider range of people and help support their arches through our taped weave and non-slip treatment, we hope to improve the lives of not only those working in factories, but those engaged in work while standing, or who must walk or sit for long periods of time, whether at work or at home.
This allows for a proper interlocking fit between the feet, socks, and shoes, minimizing slippage and excess movement and in turn reducing fatigue.

The development of this cushioned weave was recognized as a product certified by the Kinki Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “Regional Industrial Resource Utilization Business Plan,” which seeks to support the commercialization of new products and services that make use of local and regional resources.
